S T A N D - A L O N E S

Explore Athens—
But slightly to the left…

When 16-year-old Kallis goes to see Aristophanes' latest play, she's inspired to sneak into the Assembly and try to make her name as an orator. After all, she grew up at her father's knee. Even though the men around him treat her like a wild animal, Niko's always been proud of her outspoken intelligence. Kallis has no reason to suspect he'll be anything but supportive.

A feminist tale of ancient steampunk Athens, focused on the life and justice politics of a world extrapolated from history.

Vibes: The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller meets His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman, with all the focus on family dysfunction of Hades from Supergiant Games and just as much queer content.

Interzone #296: We Are Only Ourselves

FORTHCOMING

You’re a fool; you love me.

- We Are Only Ourselves

Interzone is changing, as it always has.

Hillfire Anthology, Volume I: Lipogram

pushcart-nominated 2023

Darling, myself is just myself. It isn’t shared with greater pieces, isn’t part and parcel with my partner. Please, I beg, understand me. I need this.

- Lipogram

Hillfire Press Edinburgh and the Hillfire Anthology have their roots in the creative writing MSc programme at the University of Edinburgh, 2019/20. This cohort was made up of amazing people, and we felt our time together had ended too soon, and too suddenly. What better way to keep the momentum going than to put all that talent to good use and publish an anthology together?

Hic Incipit Pestis

The galleries call for a while, but there’s nothing worth showing. His paintings never leave the sketchbook. The tubes of oil dry out and the palette is unused. It sits in a corner and makes beautiful dust.

- Two Clocks

Pandemics cause echoes in the artistic world, even if they do so silently. Four flash fiction pieces explore the ways in which various health crises (AIDS, the 1918 flu, Cholera, and yes, Covid-19) affected the artists who lived through them.

This reprinted micro-collection originally appeared in the conference notes for a Cambridge University conference in 2020.

Strange Lands (Flame Tree Press): The Little Angler

Far, far in the ocean, beyond the reach of light and life, below the cornflower-blue brightness of the Shallows and the glinting cobalt of the Twilight, is the Kingdom of the Deeps.

- The Little Angler

Strange lands in fiction stretch from deep below the earth, to the outer reaches of space. This incredible new collection combines the talents of a new generation of writers with classic and ancient storytellers: from H.G. Wells to Edgar Allan Poe, Daniel Defoe to Jules Verne. Find here too the Land of the Lotus Eaters from Homer’s Odyssey and the mad horrors of H.P. Lovecraft, the utopian fantasies of Samuel Butler and, from Hans Christian Andersen an early fantasy about visiting the moon.

The cover of From Arthur's Seat Vol. 5. Arthur's Seat is visible as a vectored grassy mountain with yellow gorse in the foreground. A blue banner is spread across the lower quarter of the image. It reads: "From Arthur's Seat: A collection"

From Arthur’s Seat, Volume V: Ordinary Death

Welcome, and do not be afraid. You have died an ordinary death under extraordinary circumstances. We at the Unfulfilled Promises Research Trust understand your alarm at the situation and are working to ensure your transition is as painless as possible.

- Ordinary Death

In times of difficulty and uncertainty, the arts can create meaning and bring people together in ways that little else can. This is tangible in the fifth volume of From Arthur’s Seat, an annual anthology of short prose and poetry written, edited, and produced entirely by students in the Creative Writing MSc at the University of Edinburgh.

Together Free: The Wanderers

My writing desk of black and white
Beneath the windows, in the sun
For forty days and forty nights
Is where I’ve battled off the glum;
I sit here now: at work, at ease,
I cannot see the cherry trees.

- The Wanderers

This book is a collection of global human experiences, realisations and stories from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the United Kingdom we are supporting the NHS, which will be the major beneficiary of all funds raised. Ten percent of the funds will be donated monthly to a selected non-UK organisation that is in need of resources to continue their work.

The Midwest Review: Character Development

The memory catches in infinity: two of us pushing a third and failing to let go, spiraling into the air, clinging tightly to each other and pretending, afterwards, that we were not afraid of falling.

- Character Development

Midwest Review is an annual literary magazine founded in 2013 to showcase work by artists who live in, have lived in, or have spent time in the Midwest.

Art in the Time of Covid-19: The Tidal Basin

All year we have waited
for spring; for the cherry blossoms.

- The Tidal Basin

"Art in the Time of COVID-19" is derived, inspired and animated by the global pandemic of 2020. The works created by writers and artists all over the world are sad, funny, profound, serious, and intensely human. They represent work by renowned artists and writers as well as by some who have never been published before.

A portion of the profits from this e-book will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.

Story Cities: The Second Car from the Front

It begins as a ritual: each arriving at the platform to catch the 7:15 in a state of slight agitation. Tapped toes on octagonal brick. Checked watches.

- The Second Car from the Front

Story Cities explores the ways in which stories respond to, reflect and re-imagine the city.
