parisian attic cancer dragon

the dragon is dying. it knows this. it is lying on its side on a bed in an attic by a window which looks out over the champs-elysees. the bed is old. the dragon is old. the dragon is too old for this shit.

“parisian attic cancer dragon” was originally published in January 2022.

I don’t have an adequate way of describing this work. It began as an exercise in bullshit—an in-joke with the wonderful Lindz McLeod about the types of pieces often accepted by prestigious literary magazines—and ended up as a legitimately stunning piece of flash fiction.

It’s about a series of animals spending their final days in an attic in Paris while dying of cancer. No, I don’t get it either.

It is archived below. An audio edition is forthcoming.

A note on the original publication…

parisian attic cancer dragon was originally published in Bear Creek Gazette. It has since been revealed that the proprietor of the publication was participating in behaviors that go against my every grain; they will not be repeated here, but suffice to say that I am a firm believer in human rights. That includes women and children. I can’t believe it’s something I have to state directly.

parisian attic cancer dragon was no longer available on a now-defunct website. If I have a pre-published piece I’d like to host on my site, I generally keep it behind the subscription wall as a courtesy.

This piece is no longer behind that wall.
